Eagle Farm a water hazard, again
THE wet track curse at Eagle Farm in 2009 continued yesterday with the meeting abandoned after just one race was run.
Since January 1 there have been 13 meetings at Eagle Farm and 10 have been on a rain-affected surface. The track was posted as a heavy nine rating early yesterday but there were further heavy rain squalls from an hour before the opening event.
In a 16-horse field, jockeys on horses back in the ruck complained about poor visibility.
“The runners were slipping and sliding and a lot of the soil fill put down after Saturday’s meeting made it very difficult for the riders to see,“ chief steward Wade Birch said.
The only race was won by Kelly Schweida-trained Don’t Do It Again, an Iglesia three-year-old who has been patiently handled.
I bought him as a yearling knowing we’d have to give him time to mature,“ Schweida said. “He’s had two very hard runs so I’ll give him an easy few weeks now.“
Shane Scriven earned his winning fee. He was covered in mud and had to pull down his goggles to see where he was going.
