Monashee Mountain Adds 45 Winners In 2 Months
The progeny of Queensland’s Racetree-based former shuttle stallion Monashee Mountain (Danzig-Prospectors Delite, by Mr Prospector) “are on a roll & the stallion’s owner Kevin Dixon just about needs an atlas to see where they are winning” declared The Courier-Mail. Last month Monashee Mountain had 24 winners in 5 countries (Australia, US, Canada, Italy & Great Britain) & so far this month he has added 21 winners in Australia, US, Italy & Great Britain.
US-bred 12-year-old Monashee Mountain (who entered stud in 2001) stood initially in Ireland & then in Kentucky & California when owned by Coolmore, while shuttling to Australia to stand at Beaudesert-based Willowbend Stud. Last year Dixon purchased him for his Innisplain-based Racetree stud (also in the Beaudesert district) & Monashee Mountain’s extensive travelling “has meant he has had runners on both sides of the Atlantic & Pacific, while from his time in Ireland his progeny have worked their way into Europe” with Dixon noting recent reports that “he had runners in Turkey & the Czech Republic”. Among his latest successes was his 9th black-type winner Slater’s Peanuts at Prairie Meadows in Iowa in the US. Monashee Mountain is the sire of 2006 G1 Stradbroke victor La Montagna and will stand the 2009 Australian breeding season at Racetree for $8,800. (Payment on live foal)
A grand future for Queensland’s Racetree stud
APPRAISAL of the mares that went to him in his first season suggests that the Danzig male line 2005-06 Sydney classic star Hotel Grand has real good opportunity to play a significant role in the provision of a grand future for Queensland’s young upmarket Innisplain valley breeding farm Racetree.
This big, powerfully made winner of the AJC Spring Champion Stakes, STC Canterbury Guineas and Newcastle Spring Stakes in a nine start career got by the Chief’s Crown shuttled champion juvenile and miler Grand Lodge from Terrestial, a Sydney winner by the Bletchingly Golden Slipper winner and champion Australasian 2YO Star Watch, had one of the best quality books put to a Queensland sire in his first season, 2007.
It was a year which he looked after 57 mares, including 40 winners, and missed on only four of them, adding up to a 91.1% fertility. They included daughters of Danehill, Royal Academy, Anabaa, Dehere, Thunder Gulch, Zabeel, Danzero, Flying Spur, Snippets, Rory’s Jester, Encosta de Lago, Strategic, Marauding, Quest for Fame, Success Express, Octagonal, Lion Hunter, Galileo, At Talaq, Canny Lad, Zeditave, End Sweep, Gilded Time, Beautiful Crown, Favorite Trick, Danewin and Langfuhr.
Among significant matings were three daughters of the American Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner and first class Australasian sire Success Express, one who got some of his best progeny when he stood on the property that is Racetree when it was owned by Peter and Wendy Moran and traded as Noble Park. One of the three sires standing alongside Hotel Grand is Greenwood Lake, a12-years younger three-quarter brother to Success Express. Both of them challenged as the best juveniles in their generation in America.
Two Danehill mares with first crop foals are Miss Eurodollar (from an Ireland sired Caerleon mare out of a half-sister to good Australian sire Scenic) and Pocketfull of Dreams (from a daughter of Sadler’s Wells), while two by Encosta de Lago are Dama De Lago (from winner of nine races and stakes placed) and Swapping (a Melbourne 2-year-old winner from a sister by Century to high class performer and producer Stage Hit).
An interesting mare with a Hotel Grand filly is Lady Tiara, a product of a mating of Beautiful Crown with Lae Lady Lae, a half-sister to Caulfield Cup second Laebeel.The Patinack Farm stud, Hunter Valley located Beautiful Crown like Hotel Grand’s sire Grand Lodge is by Chief’s Crown, a horse many would consider Danzig’s best racing son.
A champion European galloper at two and three, Grand Lodge has had outstanding performers in both hemispheres, headed by Sinndar (in Europe an unbeaten Group1 winner at two and a world leader at three, winning the English and Irish Derbys and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe; sire of Group1 winners), Grandera (an international star, sire winners Australia, Japan) and the Australians Shogun Lodge (13 stakes wins, including four Group1s, and $4,652,224) and Freemason (seven wins,16 Group1 cheques, $3,492,540).
Bred on similar lines to Shogun Lodge, a product of a mare by another Bletchingly sire, Hotel Grand is nearly a three-quarter brother to the Clear Mountain Fairview Stud, Greenmount, Qld based Outback Prince, a winner of the QTC T.J. Smith Stakes and Hobartville Stakes and an AJC Spring Champion Stakes second.They are both from Terrestial, a grandaughter of Zabriskie Point, a mare bred on a cross of great American racehorses, Sword Dancer and Swaps.

A Mountain of success
When Racetree Managing Director Kevin Dixon announced in early 2008 that they had acquired the former Danzig shuttled Monashee Mountain as a resident sire for their quality young Racetree Stud near Glenlogan Park in the Innisplain valley near Brisbane and the Gold Coast, his stock in Australia have been adding more respect to his prowess.
Monashee Mountains new kid on the block is the 4 year old Mount Verde a recent black type winner and stakes of over $200k. He is the first metropolitan winner among the four from Oro Verde, an unraced half-sister by Golden Slipper winner Rory’s Jester to Antolomeo, a Randwick 2-year-old winner who has produced seven winners including the Beautiful Crown Group 3 winning filly Crown Princess.
After winning a welter at Randwick in class record time as a 3 year old last season Mount Verde recently won the STC Schweppervescence (L) at Rosehill on Golden Slipper Day.
Connections obviously taken with Mount Verde’s form have booked his dam Oro Verde into Monashee Mountain for 2009 for a repeat mating.
“Mount Verde (see record below) is very promising and we are excited with the owners decision to bring her (Oro Verde) back to Monashee Mountain” said Mr Dixon.
“Monashee (Mountain) is so adaptable. he sires winners from 800m to 3000m , from 2 year olds to 6 and 7 and they seem to handle all surfaces including the recently installed Cushion track at the Sunshine Coast” “plus he sired winners in over 25 different countries” he added.
“Last year plenty of previous breeders to Monashee Mountain came back to utilise his services again which illustrates they are happy with the foals he produces” he concluded.

2009 RACETREE STALLION FEES ANNOUNCED
Racetree, one of Queensland’s leading thoroughbred Nurseries at Innisplain, just south of Beaudesert has announced their 2009 Stallion Roster and fees for the upcoming breeding season.
Racetree Managing Director Kevin Dixon understands the current economic crisis facing the racing industry and announced the Stallion fee reductions in line with the downturn through the sales ring.
“At Racetree we believe you must stay in touch with the current market trends and hence our reduced Stallion fees for 2009” said Mr Dixon the recently elected newly formed Brisbane Race Club foundation Chairman.
“There is no doubt the market is down in the sales ring and racing people must adapt to this downturn” he added.
“Early 2009 was good to us with the first crop of the Australian bred Greenwood Lakes realising good results at the Yearling sales at the Gold Coast with two youngsters fetching over $100k.
The youngsters by Hotel Grand are excellent types and will be keenly sought after at the sales in early 2010.
Plus, Monashee Mountain continues to produce winners and Top Marc has some nice foals on the ground and they appear to have inherited his toughness.
Again payment on live foal is still a winner for us, it gives clients that bit of room to move financially.
Most studs will most likely follow a reduction of service fees trend and we are pleased to be one of the first Studs in Queensland to announce our Stallion fees and look forward to the 2009 breeding season.” Mr Dixon concluded.

Top Marc raced against the best horses in Queensland all of his career and won 12 races overall with $418k in Stakes earnings.
Top Marc won at listed level in one of Queensland’s Premier Sprint races the SCTC Glasshouse Hcp.
In addition Top Marc finished 2nd behind Amex in the Listed GCTC Goldmarket and 2nd to Proudly Agro in the Listed Doomben Stakes.
Top Marc beat Group One winner Clangalang as a 2YO at 1400m and to show his versatility he won at Eagle Farm over 1810m as a 4YO June 8th 2002.
Top Marc won as a 2YO and was still racing against the best in February 2007.
Top Marc is the typical tough QTIS horse which has the Pedigree and race performance to make it as a sire.
A son of Canadian Silver (recently deceased), Top Marc is set to continue his sire’s consistency as a great producer of QTIS winners.

March a success
Leading Coffs Harbour Trainer Brett Bellamy paid $40,000 for a Greenwood Lake Colt from the mare Miss Hathaway at the 2009 Magic Millions QTIS 600 SALE on the Gold Coast.
The RACETREE draft realised a number of entries over $20k including $25k for a Greenwood Lake/Russami Colt purchased by Canberra mentor Nick Olive, Ex Qld Trainer and now Victorian based Shaun Dwyer paid $28k for a Monashee Mountain filly ex Warmunda, others include colts by Mossman -$22k, Secret Savings - $22k, Iglesia - $30k. Plus fillies by Greenwood Lake brought $25k and $30k and a lovely Snitzel filly purchaed by Helen Page for $28K.
Racetree Managing Director Kevin Dixon was more than pleased with the QTIS 600 results.
“Its a tough time for the industry and despite prices being down our draft was again popular amongst buyers and again it confirms RACETREE as geniune sellers” He said.
